Springtime is the perfect time to make simple, colorful benches with stuff you can find at the hardware store! Students will learn basic techniques for transforming pre-milled, dimensional lumber (aka the kind of wood you can typically find at a hardware store) into simple, strong constructions with clean lines. Then, we'll show you how to weave a seat onto your construction!

We've designed this class so that the only tools you absolutely need are a drill (with drill bits) and a handsaw. No major tool investment needed. That said, if you have access to a chop saw, palm sander, and a variety of clamps, the job will go even more quickly.

Instructors Christina Boy and Sarah Marriage team up to teach this fun, fast-paced workshop.

All skill levels welcome. No prerequisites. All you need is a computer and a good internet connection!

WOO is a non-profit safe space for training underrepresented genders in our field. As such, enrollment is limited to non-binary, trans, and woman-identifying folks over the age of 18.

CLASS TIMES ARE U.S. EASTERN TIME.

Originally from Germany where she managed an office and commercial design showroom, Christina Boy attended the Craft and Material Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia with a focus on furniture design. After completing her BFA she headed off to Western North Carolina where she was a Core Fellow at the Penland School of Crafts. There she took classes with many amazing instructors to continue her education working in wood and was also exposed to new media like steel fabrication. Upon returning to Virginia, Christina built a studio with the help of her father in law and husband, and is a full time studio artist with her shop located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison, Virginia. Although she works with all kinds of locally sourced lumber she particularly enjoys working with salvaged articles. She likes to combine her love of the classic modern with her rural, rustic environment - making pieces that have simple and clean lines yet have an added playfulness be it color, texture, or pattern. Christina has taught a variety of workshops throughout the east coast, such as at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Chestnut Creek School of Arts, and has also recently returned to the Penland School of Crafts as an instructor. When she isn’t busy in her studio, Christina can be found out and about on their little homestead, pulling weeds in the garden, or in the kitchen processing and preserving the ample produce they grow every year.
