Sharpening curved blades shouldn't be a scary, daunting process; it’s just an unfamiliar process to many folks. Hop in and get to know the tools & techniques that help keep the cussing down to a minimum when sharpening curves.
This class will cover the sharpening process of:
- carving gouges
- travisher blades
- inshaves
Within these three processes you will learn a solid baseline that includes various abrasives, sharpening tools, and holding techniques as well as helpful jigs that make sharpening curved blades much more approachable.

WOO is a non-profit safe space for training underrepresented genders in our field. As such, enrollment is limited to non-binary, trans, and woman-identifying people over the age of 18.
Claire started out with a furniture background, graduating from the North Bennett Street School’s cabinet and furniture program in 2010, and then picking up work at a cabinet shop for a few years. Over the past 8 years she has grown a small business making travishers: spokeshaves with a curved blade to shape chair seats. At domestic and international fairs she has demonstrated how they work and how they are made. And occasionally sprinkling in a travisher-making class. While still making travishers on the side, Claire is now back in a cabinet shop learning the different ways to build solid cabinets and community.
