Wood block printing has been used as a method of reproducing images on cloth and paper since as early as the 7th century. We will look at this method of printing as a creative outlet into carving wood with today’s tools, both conventional and unconventional, and producing an edition of your design.

We will cover a few elements in the design aspect for printmaking, including how to prepare your design for transfer to the wood block so it is facing the direction you want once printed. We will talk about

different options for tools, ink supplies, and paper, as well as several different wood types that work well for wood block carving.

I will demonstrate good practices for carving, like where to place hands, and other tips & tricks. We will talk about surface prep of the block once carved, getting the right consistency of ink on the inking plate and the block for printing, and hand burnishing the paper onto the inked block. You will have an overview of all that is needed to print your own designs to start a revolution, or just send some happy solstice cards. Or both.

No prerequisites, all skills level welcome.  All you need is a computer and a good internet connection!

Primarily a metal artist, Renee has re-kindled her love for printmaking while learning about working with wood at A Workshop of Our Own. She is bringing more wood into her sculpture work and designs. The future is unwritten, but it may be carved into a woodcut print.
